Got To Be Tough

“Got to Be Tough” is the debut studio album by MC Shy D, released on August 12, 1987, through Luke Skyywalker Records.

The story

Born Peter Jones in the Bronx and a cousin of Afrika Bambaataa, MC Shy D relocated to Atlanta and became known as one of the first rappers to emerge from the city. He signed with Luther Campbell’s Miami label and recorded the album between 1986 and 1987 at BRT studio in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Songs include the title track “I’ve Got to Be Tough” and “Yes Yes Y’all.”

Sound and production

MC Shy D handled most of the production himself, with co-production from DJ Man and Rodney “Kool Collie” Terry, while Luke served as executive producer and Norm Titcomb recorded and mixed. The 12-track album pairs hard drum programming and turntable scratching with samples drawn from soul and funk sources, including Earth, Wind & Fire, Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes.

Legacy

The album reached number 197 on the Billboard 200 and number 41 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, notable for a Southern rap release at the time. It was followed by “Comin’ Correct in 88.” Years later, MC Shy D was awarded $1.6 million in past royalties and damages from Luther Campbell over his two albums for the label. He is remembered as a foundational figure in Atlanta rap history.
