Illegal Business? is the debut album by Vallejo rapper Mac Mall, born Jamal Rocker, released in July 1993 by Young Black Brotha Records. Mac Dre was his mentor, and the album became one of the most celebrated independent rap records from the Bay.

The story

Mac Mall was still a teenager when he made it. Tupac Shakur directed the video for “Ghetto Theme,” and Mac Dre and Ray Luv appear on “Pimp Shit.” Pitchfork placed it at No. 72 on its 2025 list of the 100 best rap albums of all time.

Sound and production

Khayree produced the entire album, crafting smooth, melodic funk with live-sounding bass and keys behind tracks like “Sic Wit Tis” and “Crest Side Playah.”

Legacy

Illegal Business? is widely seen as a peak of the Vallejo sound and a model for independent success.
