It’s Just Begun is the 1972 album by the Jimmy Castor Bunch, led by New York saxophonist, singer and songwriter Jimmy Castor. It produced a novelty hit and one of the essential b-boy breaks.
The story
“Troglodyte (Cave Man)” became a Top 10 pop hit in 1972. But in the Bronx it was the title track that mattered: a hard-driving funk jam with a percussion breakdown that dancers waited for.
The break
“It’s Just Begun” became a staple for b-boys and b-girls through the 1970s. It reached the mainstream in 1983 when the Rock Steady Crew danced to it in the film Flashdance.
Legacy
Castor’s records have been sampled widely in hip hop, and “It’s Just Begun” remains a go-to track for breaking battles today.
