Released on May 18, 1993, by Chrysalis Records, Jazzmatazz, Volume 1 carried the subtitle “An Experimental Fusion of Hip-Hop and Jazz.” It was Guru’s first solo album, recorded at D&D Studios in New York, with Guru serving as executive producer alongside Duff Marlowe and Patrick Moxey.

Rather than building tracks only from jazz samples, Guru brought the players into the studio. Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers, Branford Marsalis, Lonnie Liston Smith, Courtney Pine, Ronny Jordan and Zachary Breaux all appear, several of them credited as track co-producers. Vocalists N’Dea Davenport, Carleen Anderson and Dee C Lee contributed, and the French rapper MC Solaar also appears.

The album reached No. 94 on the Billboard 200 and No. 15 on the R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart, and it charted in the UK, Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and New Zealand. “Trust Me” reached No. 34 on the UK Singles Chart and “No Time to Play” reached No. 25. Spin ranked it No. 20 on its list of the 20 best albums of 1993, and the record launched a series that ran to four volumes.
