Kill My Landlord is the debut album by The Coup, the Oakland group of Boots Riley, E-Roc and DJ Pam the Funkstress, released in May 1993 by Wild Pitch Records.
The story
“Not Yet Free” was the first single. Most of the songs from the group’s 1991 EP were carried over, and the album reached No. 83 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Its radical, anti-capitalist politics stood apart from the gangsta rap dominating the West Coast at the time.
Sound and production
Boots Riley produced, blending deep funk grooves with playful, De La Soul-inspired touches on tracks like “Dig It!” and “Funk.”
Legacy
It launched a long career for The Coup and for Boots Riley, who later became a filmmaker with Sorry to Bother You.
