The Notorious B.I.G.

Life After Death

Life After Death is the second album by The Notorious B.I.G., released by Bad Boy Records on March 25, 1997, sixteen days after he was killed in Los Angeles.

The story

The double album arrived in a wave of grief. “Hypnotize” and “Mo Money Mo Problems” both reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the album became one of the best-selling rap records of all time.

Sound and production

Sean Combs and the Hitmen gave it a glossy, radio-ready sheen, while DJ Premier, RZA, Havoc and others supplied harder New York beats on tracks like “Kick in the Door” and “Ten Crack Commandments.”

Legacy

It showed Biggie’s full range, from party records to storytelling, and remains a peak of the Bad Boy era.
