“MP da Last Don” is a double album by Master P, released on June 2, 1998, through No Limit Records and Priority Records. It was promoted as his last studio album.

The story

The record was released at the height of No Limit’s commercial run. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, selling 496,000 copies in its first week and 217,000 in its second. A straight-to-video film of the same name followed on December 31, 1998. The retirement framing did not hold: Master P released “Only God Can Judge Me” in 1999.

Sound and production

The album runs to 28 tracks across two discs, with Master P as executive producer and production from Beats By the Pound and DJ Daryl. Guests include Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, E-40, UGK, Snoop Dogg, Mystikal, Fiend, Soulja Slim and his brothers C-Murder and Silkk the Shocker. Singles included “Thinkin’ Bout U,” “Goodbye to My Homies,” which reached No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 5 on Hot Rap Singles, and “Hot Boys and Girls.”

Legacy

The RIAA certified the album four times platinum, and it was certified gold in Canada. It placed at No. 31 on the Billboard 200 year-end chart for 1998. Reviews were mixed, but it remains one of the best-selling albums of Master P’s career and a clear marker of No Limit’s peak in the late 1990s.
