O.G. Original Gangster is the fourth album by Ice-T, released by Sire on May 14, 1991.

The story

Released the same spring Ice-T starred in New Jack City, it included “New Jack Hustler (Nino’s Theme)” from the film’s soundtrack, which reached No. 67 on the Hot 100 and No. 3 on the rap chart. The title track hit No. 7 on the rap chart. The album peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard 200 and went gold.

Sound and production

Afrika Islam, DJ Aladdin, SLJ, Beatmaster V and others produced a long, sprawling record. The song “Body Count” introduced the band, which released its own album the next year.

Legacy

It is often called Ice-T’s best album and appears in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
