On the Nile is the 1984 debut album by Egyptian Lover, the Los Angeles DJ and producer born Greg Broussard, released on his own Egyptian Empire Records.

The story

Egyptian Lover was a star of Uncle Jamm’s Army, the DJ crew whose parties drew thousands across LA. “Egypt, Egypt” became a West Coast electro anthem.

Sound and production

He built his tracks on the Roland TR-808, with fast, syncopated drum patterns, vocoder hooks and a party-first attitude.

Legacy

LA’s electro scene came before gangsta rap took over, and Egyptian Lover remains one of its defining figures.
