The story
The album collects the duo’s singles with new material. The “Gray Side” opens with both versions of “Mystro On The Flex,” followed by “Trapped (Victims Of A Plan),” “The Timeless Insight Of Kaos” and “Slaves Of Society.” The “Black Side” has “Mass Confusion,” “Move Your Body,” “You Know The Names,” “Outcast” and “Shade Of Gray.” “The Timeless Insight Of Kaos” was also issued as a single in 1990.
Sound and production
Carl “Butch” Small and Gene David produced and composed the album. Kevin Wright and Jason Wilson engineered and mixed it, and Benny Quinn mastered it. The sleeve says it was recorded at World One Computer Lab in Detroit and Traxx Recording Studio in Oak Park, Michigan, and that all songs were “composed with The Compu-Beat-Synthtronic Process.” Titles such as “Slaves Of Society” and “Trapped (Victims Of A Plan)” sit next to the party and bass tracks.
Legacy
The album is the fullest document of Kaos & Mystro and is one of the few full-length Detroit rap records from 1989, alongside Awesome Dré’s You Can’t Hold Me Back. Its lead track is still cited in histories of Detroit hip hop.
