People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is the debut album by A Tribe Called Quest, released on April 17, 1990 by Jive Records. Warm, curious and full of jazz and rock samples, it introduced Q-Tip, Phife Dawg and Ali Shaheed Muhammad as the most inventive voices in the Native Tongues.

The story

Q-Tip had worked out much of the material on pause-button tapes as a teenager. The group recorded at Calliope and Battery Studios in New York from late 1989 into 1990, with Q-Tip the only member present at every session. The singles “I Left My Wallet in El Segundo,” “Bonita Applebum” and “Can I Kick It?” became college-radio and club favorites.

Sound and production

Engineer Shane Faber taught Q-Tip the E-mu SP-1200 and Akai S950 samplers, and he used them to flip jazz, R&B and rock records most hip hop producers of the time had ignored.

Charts and certifications

The album peaked at No. 91 on the Billboard 200 and No. 23 on the R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart. It was certified Gold on January 19, 1996, almost six years after release.

Legacy

It is often cited as the first album to receive The Source’s five-mic rating, and Entertainment Weekly ranked it No. 18 among the 100 best albums of 1983 to 2008.
