Sinista Funk is a 1994 album by Memphis rapper Al Kapone, released on Basix Music. It came out the same year as Pure Ghetto Anger on Outlaw Records, when he was still a teenager and among the few Memphis rappers of the period putting out records with conventional distribution rather than only cassette tapes.
Red Bull Music Academy’s history of early Memphis rap names Sinista Funk as the point where his sound came together, after a debut it describes as marked by stolen masters and rock influences. The site singles out “Cold Hearted Killa” from this era as an example of the Memphis sound, with its heavy breathing effects and a sample from Menace II Society.
Al Kapone went on to release Da Resurrection (1995) on Brutal Records, then started his own Alkatraz Productions for What Cha Got? (1997) and Memphis to the Bombed Out Bay (1998). A decade after Sinista Funk, his song “Whoop That Trick” was used in the 2005 film Hustle & Flow.
