So Far Gone is the 2009 mixtape by Toronto’s Drake, released as a free download in February 2009 and later issued as a shorter retail EP.

The story

“Best I Ever Had” climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 from a free mixtape, something that had never really happened before. A bidding war followed, and Drake signed with Lil Wayne’s Young Money.

Sound and production

Noah “40” Shebib gave the tape its moody, muffled, late-night sound, blending rap and R&B in a way that would define the next decade.

Legacy

So Far Gone is the blueprint for the blog era: a free project that launched a superstar.
