Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik is the debut album by OutKast, released on April 26, 1994 by LaFace and Arista. Produced by Organized Noize, it put Atlanta on the hip hop map and announced André and Big Boi as generational talents.

The story

The two met as teenagers in Atlanta and signed to LaFace in 1993, recording more than 30 songs. Sessions ran at Organized Noize’s basement studio known as The Dungeon and other Atlanta studios. “Player’s Ball” spent six weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Rap Singles chart, and “Git Up, Git Out” featured Goodie Mob, including a young CeeLo Green.

Sound and production

Rico Wade, Ray Murray and Sleepy Brown of Organized Noize favored live bass, keys, guitar and organ over pure sampling, creating a warm, soulful Southern sound that set the album apart from anything coming out of New York or Los Angeles.

Charts and certifications

The album peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 and No. 3 on the R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart, and it was certified Platinum in April 1995.

Legacy

When OutKast won Best Newcomer at the 1995 Source Awards to boos from the crowd, André answered, “The South got somethin’ to say.” This album is widely credited with getting Southern hip hop taken seriously.
