Spice 1 is the debut album by Hayward rapper Spice 1, released by Jive on April 14, 1992.
The story
Following his Let It Be Known EP, the album went gold and reached No. 14 on the R&B chart. “Welcome to the Ghetto” reached No. 5 on the rap chart, and videos were made for “In My Neighborhood,” “187 Proof” and “East Bay Gangsta.” The Source included it in its list of the 100 greatest hip hop albums.
Sound and production
Ant Banks led the production with Blackjack and E-A-Ski & CMT, delivering dark East Bay funk under Spice 1’s rapid, violent storytelling.
Legacy
It established Spice 1 as one of the hardest voices in West Coast gangsta rap.
