The Blueprint is the sixth album by Jay-Z, released by Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam on September 11, 2001.
The story
It sold over 400,000 copies in its first week despite the attacks that day. “Izzo (H.O.V.A.)” was a hit, and “Takeover” escalated Jay-Z’s feud with Nas. Eminem is the only guest rapper, on “Renegade,” which he also produced.
Sound and production
Kanye West and Just Blaze built the album around sped-up soul samples, from the Jackson 5 on “Izzo” to Bobby “Blue” Bland on “Heart of the City.” Timbaland produced “Hola’ Hovito.”
Legacy
The Blueprint made Kanye and Just Blaze stars and shifted mainstream rap toward the soul-sample sound for years.
