The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech… Just Watch What You Say! is the third album by Ice-T, released by Sire on October 10, 1989.
The story
After fights with censors on tour, Ice-T made free speech the theme. Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra appears on two tracks. Singles included “Lethal Weapon,” “What Ya Wanna Do” and “You Played Yourself.” It reached No. 37 on the Billboard 200 and went gold.
Sound and production
Ice-T and Afrika Islam produced, leaning further into rock samples, including Black Sabbath. Three songs feature the first recordings of Body Count, his heavy metal band.
Legacy
It bridged rap and punk politics and set up Ice-T’s move into rap metal.
