The Marshall Mathers LP is Eminem’s third studio album, released on May 23, 2000, through Aftermath Entertainment, Web Entertainment, Goliath Artists and Interscope Records.
The story
Arriving a year after The Slim Shady LP, the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 1.76 million copies sold in its first week in the United States and held the top spot for eight consecutive weeks. Its singles included “The Real Slim Shady,” which peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one in the UK; “Stan,” featuring Dido, a number one in the UK and Australia; and “The Way I Am.”
Sound and production
Production came from Dr. Dre, Mel-Man, F.B.T. (the Bass Brothers), Eminem and The 45 King. Dr. Dre and Mel-Man produced “Kill You,” with Mike Elizondo on bass, and The 45 King produced “Stan” with Eminem as co-producer. Jeff Bass appears on the opening “Public Service Announcement 2000.”
Legacy
At the 2001 Grammy Awards the album won Best Rap Album and was nominated for Album of the Year. The RIAA later certified it Diamond. Rolling Stone ranked it number 302 on its 500 Greatest Albums list in 2003, number 244 in the 2012 revision and number 145 in the 2020 edition.
