Trap House

“Trap House” is the debut studio album by Gucci Mane, released on May 24, 2005, through Big Cat Records and Tommy Boy Records.

The story

The album arrived on the momentum of lead single “Icy,” a Zaytoven production featuring Young Jeezy and Boo, which became a breakout record for both rappers. A dispute over the song fed a long-running rivalry between Gucci Mane and Jeezy that did not end until they shared a stage in 2020. Further singles included “Trap House,” “Money Don’t Matter,” “Go Head” and “That’s All.” Guests included Young Jeezy, Bun B, Killer Mike, Lil Scrappy, Khujo, Jody Breeze and Boo Rossini.

Sound and production

Production came mainly from Shawty Redd, Zaytoven, Nitti and The Heatmakerz. Bouncing keyboard melodies, heavy low end and Gucci Mane’s loose, playful flow mark a record built around life in and around the trap, the drug house the title refers to.

Legacy

“Trap House” reached number 1 on the Heatseekers Albums chart, number 5 on Independent Albums, number 20 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and number 101 on the Billboard 200, selling about 127,000 copies in the United States. It launched one of the most prolific careers in Southern rap, and its title became a franchise Gucci Mane revisited on several later sequels.
