Untouchable

“Untouchable” is the second studio album by Mac Mall, released on April 23, 1996, through Relativity Records.

The story

The Vallejo rapper returned with a sixteen-track set that brought in a mix of Bay Area and Los Angeles collaborators. Guest appearances came from Ant Banks, Big Hutch, Do Thangs, Kokane, Ray Luv and Young Lay. Two singles were released in 1996: “Get Right,” with Levitti on backing vocals, and “Let’s Get a Telly.” Other notable cuts include “Pimp or Die,” “Opening Doors” and “Crestside.”

Sound and production

The production roster is one of the deepest of its era in Northern California rap. Mike Mosley, Khayree, Rick Rock, Ant Banks, Kevin Gardner, Tone Capone and Robert Redwine represent the Bay, while Cold 187um of Above the Law and Prodeje add a Southern California touch. The album runs just under an hour and three minutes.

Legacy

“Untouchable” peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard 200 and No. 6 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, and “Get Right” reached No. 41 on the Hot Rap Songs chart. It marked Mac Mall’s move to wider national distribution and remains a reference point for the Vallejo sound of the mid-1990s.
