“Welcome to O’Block” is the debut studio album by Chicago rapper King Von, released on October 30, 2020, through Only the Family and Empire Distribution.

The story

King Von, signed to Lil Durk’s Only the Family label, followed his 2020 mixtape “Levon James” with this album and described it as an improvement on everything he had done before. The title refers to O’Block, the nickname for the Parkway Gardens area of Chicago’s South Side where he was raised. Six singles preceded or accompanied it, among them “Why He Told,” “All These N****s” with Lil Durk, “How It Go,” “I Am What I Am” with Fivio Foreign, “Gleesh Place” and “The Code” with Polo G. One week after release, on November 6, 2020, King Von was fatally shot in Atlanta, making this the only studio album issued in his lifetime.

Sound and production

Chopsquad DJ served as executive producer, with beats from Tay Keith, Wheezy, Hitmaka, DJ Ayo, JTK, Turn Me Up Josh and others. The sixteen tracks move between hard drill and more reflective moments, anchored by Von’s detailed, cinematic narratives. Guests include Polo G, Lil Durk, Dreezy, Moneybagg Yo, Fivio Foreign and Prince Dre.

Legacy

The album peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and topped both the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Independent Albums charts. Critics praised his storytelling and the humanity of his characters, and the album was certified Platinum by the RIAA in December 2024.
