World Class is the 1985 debut album by the World Class Wreckin’ Cru, the Los Angeles group led by Alonzo Williams with a young Dr. Dre, DJ Yella and Cli-N-Tel, released on Williams’s Kru-Cut Records.
The story
The group grew out of Williams’s Eve After Dark club in Compton. “Surgery,” with its famous call for Dr. Dre, became a local electro hit.
Sound and production
Dre and Yella built drum-machine electro with scratching and synths, a world away from the sound they would create with N.W.A just a few years later.
Legacy
It’s the missing link between LA electro and N.W.A, and a fascinating early look at Dr. Dre’s production.
