Young Black Brotha is an album by Mac Dre, released on November 29, 1993, and produced by Vallejo’s Khayree.

The story

Mac Dre was serving a sentence when it came out, and some of his vocals were recorded over the phone. Songs include the title track, “California Livin’” and “My Chevy” with his protégé Mac Mall. It reached No. 93 on the R&B chart and was his biggest release up to that point.

Sound and production

Khayree’s smooth, melodic Vallejo funk was the backdrop, in what turned out to be their last collaboration.

Legacy

Rapping from behind bars only grew the Mac Dre legend, and this record is a cornerstone of Vallejo rap.
