Hush
Hush (Daniel Carlisle): Detroit rapper, ex-Da Ruckus, signed to Geffen for Bulletproof (2005) with “Hush Is Coming” feat. Nate Dogg; earlier Roses & Razorblades (2003).
Da Ruckus
Hush is the stage name of Daniel Carlisle, a rapper from Detroit. He started in the duo Da Ruckus with Jermaine “Uncle Ill” Harbin. Their independent release Quiet As Kept came out in 1997, followed by the 1998 EP Episode 1, which featured D12 members Eye-Kyu, Bizarre, Swifty McVay and Eminem. Those releases linked Hush to the D12 circle early on.
Independent solo work
As a solo artist, Hush released singles on Intuit-Solar in 1999, among them “Access Denied” and “Knuckle Up,” and then the album There Goes The Neighborhood in 2000. Rock City Records released Roses & Razorblades on June 10, 2003. Hush produced most of that album himself, with guests including Royce da 5’9” and Cadillac Dale. He also appeared on regional compilations such as the Detroit Underground series.
Geffen and Bulletproof
Hush signed with Geffen Records. In spring 2005 he released the single “Hush Is Coming,” featuring Nate Dogg and produced by Eminem with additional production by Luis Resto. Bulletproof followed on August 23, 2005, with guest spots from Eminem, Kuniva, Swifty McVay, Bizarre, Talib Kweli and Nate Dogg. A clean version of “Fired Up” was used on the soundtrack of the video game Need for Speed: Most Wanted. The album debuted at No. 83 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and No. 39 on the Heatseekers Albums chart. The Detroit Metro Times later reported that Geffen pulled its support amid the backlash against rap-rock and that the album sold far below the label’s expectations.
Later career
Hush kept releasing music independently. The Open Book and the single “Rise Again” came out in 2009, followed by Danny Boy: The Life & Times Of A Kid In The D in 2014. He has won multiple Detroit Music Awards in the hip hop categories.
