Jorge Ben (Jorge Ben Jor): Rio singer-guitarist who fused samba, soul and funk. “Mas Que Nada” (1963), “Taj Mahal,” A Tábua de Esmeralda (1974), África Brasil (1976).

Rio

Jorge Duílio Lima Menezes was born in Rio de Janeiro (1939 by most accounts, though other dates circulate). His percussive, off-center guitar style came out of samba and the rock and roll he heard as a kid in the Zona Norte.

Samba Esquema Novo

His 1963 debut Samba Esquema Novo opened with “Mas Que Nada,” later a worldwide hit for Sérgio Mendes. Through the 60s and 70s he kept pushing samba toward soul and funk: Força Bruta (1970) with the Trio Mocotó, A Tábua de Esmeralda (1974), and the electric África Brasil (1976).

Taj Mahal

“Taj Mahal” from 1972 became the center of a dispute with Rod Stewart over “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?,” settled out of court. He has recorded as Jorge Ben Jor since 1989.
