Oak Park
Timothy Patterson grew up in Sacramento's Oak Park neighborhood, raised by his grandmother. He started rapping at 12 with his uncle and recorded as Lil Tim from 1999, before going full-time as Mozzy in 2010 with the mixtape Money Means Mozzy.
Black Market, again
Mozzy served about a year in state prison after a 2014 arrest. When he came home in 2015 he released three projects in five months through Black Market Records, the label that built Sacramento rap in the 90s: Yellow Tape Activities, Gangland Landscape and Beautiful Struggle. The video for “Bladadah” passed three million views, and Rolling Stone ranked the Bladadah tape among the best rap albums of 2015.
National
Working with his childhood friend, producer JuneOnnaBeat, Mozzy became the voice of a new Sacramento. His debut studio album 1 Up Top Ahk (2017) included the platinum “Sleep Walkin'.” Gangland Landlord (2018) brought in ScHoolboy Q, YG and Too $hort, and Untreated Trauma (2021) reached No. 19 on the Billboard 200. He joined Yo Gotti's CMG for the Gangsta Art compilations, and served another sentence on a federal gun charge before his early release in 2023.
Mozzy's rise closed a circle: the Sacramento sound that Black Market launched with X-Raided and Brotha Lynch Hung in the 90s reached the charts through an Oak Park rapper a generation later.
