Serato changed DJing without killing the turntable. The Auckland company, founded in 1998, partnered with Rane after a 2003 NAMM demo, and in 2004 they released Scratch Live: special timecode records that let DJs control digital music files on ordinary turntables, scratches and all.
History
Scratch Live freed DJs from carrying crates while keeping the feel of vinyl, and it became the standard in clubs. It was replaced by Serato DJ in 2012, now sold as DJ Pro and DJ Lite, and Serato Studio added a beat-making program in 2019.
The hip hop connection
DJ Jazzy Jeff was an early adopter who thanked Serato in his album liner notes and recommended it to Questlove. He and A-Trak were among the best-known professional users.
Buying today
DJ Lite comes free with supported controllers, and DJ Pro unlocks the full feature set. Used Rane interfaces are the classic way in; check compatibility with current software.
