Steinberg Cubase is one of the oldest DAWs still going. It launched in 1989 as a MIDI sequencer for the Atari ST, and Steinberg went on to create VST, the plug-in standard nearly every music program uses today.
History
Cubase VST 3.7 in 1999 introduced software instruments that run inside the DAW, which changed how music was made. Yamaha bought Steinberg in 2004, and Cubase is sold in Pro, Artist and Elements editions.
The hip hop connection
German production duo Cubeatz named themselves after the software they started making beats in. They went on to co-produce Travis Scott’s No. 1 hit “Sicko Mode” and Drake’s “Summer Sixteen.”
Getting it today
Lighter editions come bundled with many audio interfaces, and upgrades between editions are available from Steinberg.
