Xfer Serum is the wavetable synth of the 2010s. Built by Steve Duda, a longtime deadmau5 collaborator, and released in 2014, it made wavetable synthesis visual and fast, with high-quality oscillators and an editor for drawing your own waves.
History
Serum became one of the most common synths in electronic and pop production. Serum 2 arrived in March 2025 as a free upgrade for existing owners, which drew wide praise.
The hip hop connection
Serum is widely used for modern rap basses and leads, and countless preset packs are sold for it, but we haven’t found a reliable source tying it to a specific rap record.
