Roland TR-808

The Roland TR-808 Rhythm Composer is the most influential drum machine in hip hop. Released in 1980 and discontinued in 1983 after roughly 12,000 units, it failed in the studio market, then became the booming heartbeat of electro, rap, Miami bass, Southern hip hop and trap.

History

Chief engineer Tadao Kikumoto developed the 808 under Roland founder Ikutaro Kakehashi. Unlike the Linn LM-1, which played back recordings of real drums, the 808 creates every sound with analog circuits. Kakehashi deliberately used faulty transistors to get its sizzling tone. Buyers who wanted realistic drums passed on it, Roland ended production in 1983, and used units soon sold for under $100. That price put it in the hands of young producers.

The sound

The kick drum is the legend. Its decay control stretches the kick into a long, low boom that can be tuned and played like a bassline, a technique Rick Rubin helped popularize. Around it sit the snappy snare, the handclap, the clave and the cowbell that defined early rap records. Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force’s “Planet Rock” (1982, produced by Arthur Baker) is the landmark 808 electro-rap record.

Classic hip hop records

Run-DMC, LL Cool J and Public Enemy all used the 808. The Beastie Boys built “Paul Revere” on a reversed 808 beat and used it on “Brass Monkey” from Licensed to Ill. On It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, the Bomb Squad used decaying, pitch-shifted 808 drums sampled off records in place of basslines. Its clave patterns turn up on OutKast’s Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, and it has been credited with appearing on more hit records than any other drum machine.

Buying one today

Original TR-808s are prized collector pieces. Listings are crowded with modern alternatives: Roland’s TR-8 and TR-8S, the TR-08 Boutique (2017) and the TR-1000 (2025), plus Behringer’s RD-8 analog clone (2019). If you want the original, look for the “TR-808 Rhythm Composer” name on the panel, check that every voice sounds, and test the step buttons and sliders.
