The Korg Triton is the sound of rap radio at the turn of the millennium. Released in 1999, this keyboard workstation combined a huge library of presets, a sampler, a sequencer and arpeggiators, and producers built hit after hit straight out of the box.
History
The Triton brought the power of Korg’s expensive Trinity to a lower price. It has 62 voices, 32 MB of waveforms, an onboard sampler with up to 96 MB of RAM, a 16-track sequencer and a touchscreen. A long run of models followed, including the Rack, Pro, ProX, Le, Studio and Extreme, before the line ended around 2008.
The hip hop connection
Korg’s own history names Timbaland, the Neptunes, Swizz Beatz and Pharrell’s N.E.R.D. as Triton users, along with Eminem’s keyboardist Tommy Coster Jr. TIDAL called it “without question the king of rap production throughout the early 2000s,” pointing to the Neptunes’ beat for Clipse’s “Grindin’.” Its presets are so recognizable that producers still use Korg’s software version to recreate them.
Buying one today
Know which model you’re getting: the Le lacks the sampler as standard, and the Extreme has 160 MB of ROM. Check the touchscreen, the storage drive and the installed sample RAM.
