The Akai MPC Key 61 is the MPC as a keyboard workstation. Launched in June 2022 for $1,899, it combines 61 semi-weighted keys, 16 pads, a touchscreen and 25 built-in instruments, all running standalone.
History
Sound On Sound called it Akai’s first standalone production synthesizer keyboard. Like other modern MPCs, it includes MPC60 and MPC3000 vintage emulation, so producers can dial in the feel of the classics. A smaller MPC Key 37 followed.
The hip hop connection
Scott Storch appeared in Akai’s promotional ad for it, and Equipboard lists Zaytoven and Mike WiLL Made-It among its users.
Buying one today
It’s heavy, so expect high shipping costs and check carefully for transit damage. Don’t confuse it with the Key 37, which has less memory.
