“Down & Dirty” is the debut studio album by The Click, released on May 7, 1992, through Sick Wid It Records, and reissued by Jive Records in 1995.
The story
Recorded in 1991 and 1992, the album introduced the Vallejo group of E-40, B-Legit, D-Shot and Suga-T on their own independent label. Guests included Mugzi, Kaveo, Little Bruce and Levitti. “Tired of Being Stepped On” was given a music video, which featured a cameo from C-Bo.
Sound and production
Production was handled by Mike Mosley and Studio Ton, the in-house team that would shape much of the early Sick Wid It sound. The original tape carried sixteen songs, and a 1994 CD edition dropped two of them. When Jive reissued the album in 1995, it was substantially reworked: seven tracks from the original tape were cut entirely and five were remixed, leaving only six songs in their first form.
Legacy
The album reached No. 87 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Because of the heavy changes made for the reissue, the independent and major-label editions are effectively different records, and the original Sick Wid It pressing documents the group before its commercial breakthrough with “Game Related.”
