Atrocity Exhibition

Atrocity Exhibition is the fourth studio album by Danny Brown, released on September 27, 2016. It was his first album for Warp Records.

The story

Brown announced the title in July 2016. It refers to both the Joy Division song and J.G. Ballard’s novel of the same name. The singles “When It Rain,” “Pneumonia” and “Really Doe” came out ahead of the album, and “Ain’t It Funny” was released as a single in April 2017 with a video directed by Jonah Hill.

Sound and production

Paul White produced most of the album. Additional production came from Black Milk, Evian Christ, The Alchemist, Petite Noir and Playa Haze. Guests include Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul and Earl Sweatshirt on the posse cut “Really Doe,” along with B-Real, Kelela and Petite Noir.

Legacy

The album debuted at No. 77 on the Billboard 200 with 7,000 equivalent units and reached No. 5 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It has a Metacritic score of 85 from 31 reviews. It appeared on year-end lists from Pitchfork (No. 11), Complex (No. 12) and The Guardian (No. 13), and Paste later ranked it No. 237 on its list of the 300 greatest albums of all time. Brown stayed with Warp for uknowhatimsayin¿ in 2019.
