Early years
Danny Brown was born Daniel Dewan Sewell on March 16, 1981, in Detroit. His father was a DJ, and Brown started rapping young. In 2003 he formed the group Rese’vor Dogs with Chips and Dopehead, and they released Runispokets-N-Dumpemindariva. His solo mixtapes included Hot Soup (2008) and Hawaiian Snow (2010), a collaboration with Tony Yayo. His first studio album, The Hybrid, came out on Rappers I Know in 2010.
XXX
Brown signed to Fool’s Gold Records, which released XXX as a free download in August 2011. The mixtape was built around his turning 30. Pitchfork gave it 8.2 and ranked it among the year’s best albums. Spin named it the top hip-hop album of 2011 and named Brown its artist of the year, and Metro Times did the same. The standalone single “Grown Up” (2012) won a Woodie Award for best video.
Old and Atrocity Exhibition
Old, his first official retail album, was released on Fool’s Gold in October 2013 and debuted at No. 18 on the Billboard 200. Brown split it into a Side A and a Side B, reflecting his underground and trap-influenced sides. Guests included Freddie Gibbs, A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, Purity Ring and Charli XCX. He then moved to Warp Records, which released Atrocity Exhibition in September 2016. The album was produced mainly by Paul White and features the posse cut “Really Doe” with Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul and Earl Sweatshirt.
Later work
uknowhatimsayin¿ followed on Warp in 2019 and won a 2020 Libera Award for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Album. In 2023 he released the collaborative album Scaring the Hoes with JPEGMafia, and later that year Quaranta. Stardust, released in 2025, draws on hyperpop. Brown is also a member of the Detroit collective Bruiser Brigade.
