“The Hemp Museum” is the second solo studio album by B-Legit, released on November 26, 1996, through Sick Wid It Records and Jive Records.
The story
A member of the Vallejo group The Click alongside E-40, D-Shot and Suga-T, B-Legit followed his 1993 solo debut “Tryin’ to Get a Buck” with this set, serving as its executive producer. The guest list pulled from both the Bay Area and beyond, with E-40, C-Bo, Celly Cel, Levitti, Funk Mobb, A-1 and Kurupt all appearing. Singles included “Check It Out” and “Gotta Buy Your Dope From Us” in 1996, followed by “Ghetto Smile” in 1997.
Sound and production
The album leans on the Sick Wid It production circle, with Studio Ton, Mike Mosley, Kevin Gardner and Tone Capone joined by Redwine, Femi Ojetunde, Emgee, Funk Daddy and K-Lou. Its best-known moment, “Ghetto Smile,” reworks the Hall & Oates song “Sara Smile” with fresh vocals from Daryl Hall himself, and the track later landed on the soundtrack to the 1997 film “Dangerous Ground.”
Legacy
The record peaked at No. 55 on the Billboard 200 and No. 15 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Reviewers singled out B-Legit’s deep baritone and noted that the album would reward listeners already tuned to the Vallejo style, and it stands as one of the core solo entries in the mid-1990s Sick Wid It catalog.
