Antônio Carlos Jobim
Antônio Carlos “Tom” Jobim (1927–1994): Rio composer who built bossa nova. “The Girl from Ipanema,” “Águas de Março,” Wave (1967), Stone Flower (1970).
Rio
Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim was born in Rio de Janeiro on January 25, 1927, and grew up in Ipanema. He started out playing piano in Copacabana bars and arranging for the Odeon label in the 1950s.
Bossa nova
With the poet Vinícius de Moraes and the guitarist João Gilberto he shaped bossa nova at the end of the 1950s: “Chega de Saudade,” “Desafinado,” “Garota de Ipanema.” Getz/Gilberto (1964), with Stan Getz and João and Astrud Gilberto, took “The Girl from Ipanema” around the world.
CTI and the crates
His late-60s records for Creed Taylor, Wave (1967) and Stone Flower (1970), with their deep, spacious grooves, are standard issue in any beat digger’s Brazilian section. In 1974 he recorded Elis & Tom with Elis Regina in Los Angeles, including the definitive “Águas de Março.” He died in New York on December 8, 1994; Rio’s international airport carries his name.
