Elis Regina
Elis Regina (1945–1982): Porto Alegre-born singer, the defining voice of MPB. “Arrastão” (1965), Elis & Tom (1974), “Como Nossos Pais,” “O Bêbado e a Equilibrista.”
Porto Alegre
Elis Regina Carvalho Costa was born in Porto Alegre on March 17, 1945, and was singing on local radio as a kid. She moved to Rio in 1964.
The festivals
Her performance of Edu Lobo and Vinícius de Moraes’s “Arrastão” won the 1965 TV Excelsior festival and made her a star overnight. With Jair Rodrigues she hosted O Fino da Bossa on TV Record, the show that turned bossa nova and the new songwriters into what became MPB.
Elis & Tom and after
In 1974 she recorded Elis & Tom with Antônio Carlos Jobim in Los Angeles. Working with pianist and husband César Camargo Mariano, she championed young writers like Belchior (“Como Nossos Pais”) and João Bosco and Aldir Blanc, whose “O Bêbado e a Equilibrista” (1979) became the anthem of the amnesty movement under the military dictatorship. She died in São Paulo on January 19, 1982, at 36. Her children João Marcello Bôscoli, Pedro Mariano and Maria Rita all work in music.
