Azymuth: Rio jazz-funk trio of José Roberto Bertrami, Alex Malheiros and Ivan “Mamão” Conti. “Linha do Horizonte,” “Jazz Carnival” (1979), Light as a Feather.

Samba doido

Keyboardist José Roberto Bertrami, bassist Alex Malheiros and drummer Ivan “Mamão” Conti came together in Rio in the early 1970s as session players, including on Marcos Valle’s records. They took their name from Valle’s song “Azimuth” and called their mix of samba, jazz and funk “samba doido,” crazy samba.

Jazz Carnival

After their 1975 debut they signed with Milestone in the U.S. “Jazz Carnival,” from Light as a Feather (1979), became a club hit in the UK, and “Fly Over the Horizon” (“Vôo Sobre o Horizonte”) was later used as the theme of the BBC’s Tomorrow’s World.

Far Out

From the 1990s they recorded for London’s Far Out Recordings and stayed a favorite of DJs and beatmakers. Bertrami died in 2012 and Conti in 2023.
