Devin the Dude
Laid-back Houston rapper Devin Copeland, a Rap-A-Lot artist from the 1990s onward, known for humorous, weed-friendly storytelling and features with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg.
From Pontiac to Houston
Devin Charles Copeland was born in Pontiac, Michigan, on June 4, 1969. He spent his early childhood in St. Petersburg, Florida, moved to Texas before fourth grade, and lived in Douglasville, New Boston and Houston before settling in Houston after finishing high school. In 1988 he formed the group 3D with his brother Dexter and Jugg Mugg.
Odd Squad and Facemob
After meeting Rob Quest at a talent show, Copeland formed the Odd Squad, later renamed the Coughee Brothaz. The group's Rap-A-Lot album “Fadanuf fa Erybody!!” was released on February 1, 1994. He then spent a short period in Facemob under the guidance of Scarface before launching his solo career in 1998.
Rap-A-Lot solo run
His solo debut “The Dude” (1998) was followed by “Just Tryin' ta Live” (2002), which reached No. 61 on the Billboard 200 and included the cannabis anthem “Doobie Ashtray.” “To tha X-Treme” (2004) peaked at No. 55, and “Waitin' to Inhale” (2007), featuring “What a Job” with Snoop Dogg and André 3000, became his highest-charting album at No. 30 on the Billboard 200 and No. 9 on the R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart, where “To tha X-Treme” had reached No. 6. He also appeared with Snoop Dogg on “F*** You” from Dr. Dre's “2001.”
Independent years
After Rap-A-Lot he released “Landing Gear” (2008) on Razor & Tie, which reached No. 47, followed in 2010 by “Suite 420” and “Gotta Be Me,” and by “One for the Road” (2013) on Coughee Brothaz Music. He starred in the 2012 stoner comedy “Highway,” and his guest credits include De La Soul, Slim Thug, Tech N9ne and Gucci Mane. In 2025 he co-created the cannabis-culture brand Coughee by Devin the Dude.
