Canão
Mauro Mateus dos Santos was born in São Paulo on April 3, 1973, and grew up in the Favela do Canão in the south zone, which gave him his nickname, O Maestro do Canão.
Rap É Compromisso
Encouraged by Racionais MC’s’ circle, he released Rap É Compromisso in 2000. His flow was loose and conversational where most São Paulo rap was stern, and tracks like “Um Bom Lugar” and “Respeito É pra Quem Tem” made him one of the most respected voices in the country.
Film
He acted and consulted on Beto Brant’s O Invasor (2001) and Héctor Babenco’s Carandiru (2003). He was shot and killed in São Paulo on January 24, 2003, at 29. A posthumous album, Sabotage, finished by friends and collaborators, came out in 2016.
