D'Phuzion
D’Phuzion: Detroit female rapper, Almighty Dreadnaughts member, featured on Champtown’s “Bang Bang Boogie” (2000) and her own Streetlights 12-inch (2001).
Discovery
D’Phuzion is a female rapper from Detroit. A 2004 Detroit Metro Times profile of producer and label owner Champtown (Brian Harmon) reports that he discovered her at an East Side open mic night in 1997. Champtown ran Straight Jacket Records, a small family-run Detroit label that recorded local artists from across the city, and D’Phuzion became one of its featured voices.
“Bang Bang Boogie”
Her best-known record is “Bang Bang Boogie,” issued as Champtown Introducing D’Phuzion and also credited as Champtown featuring D’Phuzion. It was released as a single alongside Champtown’s “Da Da Song,” and Discogs also credits her on Champtown’s 1999 Straight Jacket album Now Or Never Nigga!. According to the Metro Times, it spent months on Billboard’s R&B/rap singles chart and peaked at No. 21 in spring 2000, and its music video was played on BET and MuchMusic.
Solo releases and Dreadnaughts work
In 2001 Straight Jacket issued her own 12-inch, Streetlights, backed with a track titled “F**k It.” Discogs also lists The Ultra Violent Mixtape (2006, Funeral Muzik) and I Am Something Different (2011). D’Phuzion is a member of the Detroit collective Almighty Dreadnaughts. She appears on the group’s 2000 album Point Of No Return, on the track “Battle Groundz,” and on releases by fellow members Supa Emcee and Alius Pnukkl.
Guest appearances
Her credits across Detroit’s independent scene include guest spots on albums by PDQ, Street Lord Juan, Marquise Porter and A.R.E.S., and tracks on DJ King David’s Detroit Streets mixtape series. Taken together, her discography runs from the late-1990s Straight Jacket era into the 2010s.
