Thaíde & DJ Hum
Thaíde & DJ Hum: São Paulo pioneers out of the São Bento metro station scene, on the 1988 Hip-Hop Cultura de Rua compilation. “Senhor Tempo Bom.”
São Bento
In the mid-1980s São Paulo hip hop gathered on the steps of the São Bento metro station downtown, where b-boys, DJs and MCs met every weekend. Altair Gonçalves, known as Thaíde, came up there as a breaker and MC and teamed with DJ Hum (Humberto Martins).
Cultura de Rua
They were on Hip-Hop Cultura de Rua (1988), one of the first Brazilian hip hop records, and went on to release a string of albums through the 90s. “Senhor Tempo Bom,” a look back at the black dance and soul scene that came before hip hop, became their best-known song.
Legacy
Thaíde later worked as a TV presenter and actor while keeping a solo career. The duo are often called the first generation of Brazilian rap, alongside Racionais MC’s.
