Brixton

Benedict Okwuchukwu Godwin Chijioke was born in London on August 17, 1972, and came from Brixton. In 1995 he co-founded Ghetto Grammar, a project teaching hip hop to young people.

Big Dada

His albums Awkward (2001) and Upwards (2003) came out on Big Dada. Upwards, with “Oh U Want More?,” was nominated for the 2004 Mercury Prize. Closer (2006), Special Kind of Fool (2010, BBE) and A Work of Heart (2018) followed. He was on the UK remix of Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek’s “Down for the Count” with Blak Twang, and in 2019 formed Kingdem with Blak Twang and Rodney P.

Rest in peace

Ty died in London on May 7, 2020, of pneumonia while being treated for COVID-19. Murals went up for him in Brixton.
