Mr. Doctor biography and discography: South Sacramento’s Garden Blocc rapper, discovered at a freestyle session, Setripn’ Bloccstyle on Black Market Records, produced by Brotha Lynch Hung.
Out of the Garden Blocc
Mr. Doctor came up on the Southside of Sacramento in the same Garden Blocc circle as Brotha Lynch Hung, X-Raided and C-Bo. He was discovered at a freestyle session in East Sacramento, and cut his first recording, “Leavin' 'em with No Clue,” at Enharmonic Studios, the same studio where Lynch made Season of da Siccness.
Setripn' Bloccstyle
After guest spots on MC2 & JDog's Killers and Dealers in Violent Areas (1994) and Brotha Lynch Hung's Season of da Siccness (1995), he released his debut album, Setripn' Bloccstyle, on Black Market Records in November 1995. The album was presented by Brotha Lynch Hung, who produced almost every track and appears on several, including “Bloccstyle,” “Killa Cap Pilla” and “Da Real Deal.”
It captures the Sacramento Black Market sound at its peak: slow, heavy, menacing beats and Garden Blocc street tales, a close cousin of Lynch's own records.
After Black Market
Mr. Doctor stayed with Black Market for Bombay (1999) and Doc Holiday (2001), then moved to Epidemic for Documentary (2004) and Bloccstyle 2 (2007). His catalog is a cult favorite among collectors of 90s Sacramento rap, and original Black Market pressings of his debut are sought after.
