Tim Maia
Tim Maia (1942–1998): Tijuca-born singer who brought soul and funk to Brazil. “Azul da Cor do Mar,” the Racional albums (1975–76), “Do Leme ao Pontal.”
Tijuca
Sebastião Rodrigues Maia was born in Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, on September 28, 1942. As a teenager he played in the Sputniks with Roberto Carlos, then spent the early 1960s in the United States, where he soaked up doo-wop and soul.
Brazilian soul
Back in Brazil he fused soul, funk and baião and more or less invented Brazilian soul. His 1970 debut, with “Primavera” and “Azul da Cor do Mar,” was a hit, and the run of albums that followed sits in every serious crate of Brazilian funk.
Racional
In 1975 he joined the Universo em Desencanto sect and pressed Racional Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 on his own Seroma label: his heaviest funk, disowned by him after he left the sect, and for decades almost impossible to find. Luaka Bop’s 2012 compilation brought them to a new audience. Later hits include “Do Leme ao Pontal” and “Descobridor dos Sete Mares.” He died in Niterói on March 15, 1998.
